Master Class: How to Create Your Own Jobs

Kathy Aylsworth Brantigan, Gene Fry, and Theresa Hanebury presented a panel discussion, June 28, 2000, entitled “How to Create Your Own Work.” Discussion focused on several broad areas, including 1) how to become the musician(s) of choice, 2) how to market your product, 3) how to make your product extraordinary, 4) how to find performance opportunities, 5) how to produce your own concert series, and 6) setting up tours. There was much discussion about the unique “marketability” of brass, and the vast untapped audience that exists everywhere. There was a strong feeling among participants that most musicians are ill-prepared to enter the music business world, and therefore are unable to reach many of their performance goals.
