Masterclass: Dan Perantoni – Tuba

One of the 10:30 a.m. Wednesday Master Classes was presented by the “master” himself: Mr. Dan Perantoni. Perantoni “delivered the goods” in full splendor. His master class was packed with helpful information and ideas to benefit performers at all levels. Working first with euphoniumist Adam Frey, who performed the third movement of David Gillingham’s Blue Lake Fantasies, Perantoni guided Frey to adjust his style and pitch emphasis. The results were extremely interesting as Frey capably responded to Perantoni’s instructions. Perantoni’s work with tubist Brian Sands focused on encouraging him to exude even more emotion in his playing. Perantoni emphasized the importance of “feeling” the music completely and communicating that sensitivity to the audience. This same precept was carried forth to the next musician, euphoniumist Eric Spinelli. Perantoni also helped Spinelli relax so he could enjoy his performance more and improve intonation at the same time. Addressing issues of equipment and intonation, Perantoni underscored the necessity of not being satisfied with less than the indefectible. Attendees of the master class illustrated their appreciation for Perantoni with their resounding applause.
